Increase independence of seniors and individuals with disabilities.

Why is it important? 

Here in Portage County:

  • 6.2% of adults of the age of 65 in Portage County are living in poverty
  • 11.9% of the population in Portage County has one or more disabilities
  • 33% of energy assistance applications in 2006/2007 were elderly residents
    WI Department of Human Services projects that the # of older adults(65+) in Portage County will double to 22% between now and 2030

Empower low income individuals to become financially stable.

Why is it important? 

People in Portage County are concerned about financial stability, and the number of individuals in Portage County living in poverty continues to rise. All poverty data indicators show substantial increases in the number of individuals living in poverty.

  • In 2007, low income families surveyed by CAP Services ranked inability to save, inability to pay bills, debt management, jobs with health insurance, car maintenance and car repair issues all within the top ten community issues. 
  • Jobs with good wages was the 3rd highest rated community issue among the 488 households that participated in the LIFE Report phone survey.
  • Only the 50% of low income families surveyed by CAP in 2007 had completed their high school diploma/GED.
